NGO Bulgaria Gateway

Saturday 27 September 2003

NGO Bulgaria is an initiative of the Internet Rights Bulgaria Foundation (IRBF) aiming to promote Bulgarian social non-government organisations (NGOs) and social movements on the Internet by providing them with a free basic and easy to use personal web site.

Need for the project

The project NGO Bulgaria was initiated in November 2003 when the IRBF team realised how many Bulgarian social NGOs among their partners and friends, working on interesting projects and initiatives lack the technical and financial ressources to publish them online.

This fact acts as a communication barrier between the civil society organisations and the public, as well as between organisations on a national and international level. The lack of information on the NGOs activities brings to the wrong idea that they are not active enough, or to doubts of which NGOs are doing their civil obligations and which are false.

Aims of the project

NGO Bulgaria Project was created with the following aims: to build what will become a central point on the Internet for Bulgarian social NGOs who wish to publish information about themselves and their projects to build a trusted, secure and quality home on the Internet for Bulgarian social NGOs. to publish reliable documentation translated into Bulgarian language, and related to matters such as technical accessibility of the websites, as well as topics, related to the NGOs who are interested in joining the ICT world.

The aim of the project is also to lower the digital gap by: sharing the costs of starting and maintaining a web site and other technical ressources offering an easy to use and maintain tool for social NGOs who will be able to publish news and other type of information on their own training Bulgarian social NGOs on how to publish information on the Internet as well as how to use ICTs strategically.

Sustainability and funding

Currently, NGO Bulgaria is self-funded only by the volunteers who are investing their personal time, energy and financial resource. In a longer term, the project aims to become sustainable, receiving small funing from: contributions by NGOs with bigger and more specific needs on building their website and online presentation contributions by the public and individuals who wish to encourage the project development.
